The banded gastric bypass is a minimally invasive bariatric procedure which incorporates the restriction of the lap band with the metabolic advantages and the dumping phenomena of the gastric bypass. It is an operation which has been perfected over the years at Capella Bariatric Surgery. The technique, first described by Dr. Rafael F. Capella, has been performed at leading medical institutions in the United States and around the world for many years with superb results. It provides the consistency of a bypass surgery with the permanent restriction of a band. Not only does this procedure have the greatest documented short term weight loss it also has the greatest documented long term weight loss (i.e. more than five years).
Advantages:
- Most successful weight loss procedure, weight loss averages 75% of excess body weight, especially in the severely obese with BMIs of greater than 50
- Operative times regularly from 60 to 75 minutes
- Maintains long term restriction with a non-adjustable band which does not stretch
- Safe, with an extensive documented history of success
Disadvantages:
- In experienced hands it is a safe procedure, however, complications can still occur. Early complications include leaks, pulmonary embolism and wound infections
- Chewing carefully is central to eating comfortably and tolerating a greater variety of food
- Vitamins are recommended for life
